Mets claim Tommy Milone off waivers

In their quest to add depth to an already-depleted starting rotation, the New York Mets have claimed pitcher Tommy Milone off of waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers. Milone, 30, will presumably enter the Mets rotation as soon as possible.

With injuries to Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz, and Seth Lugo, New York had been scouting the open market for starting pitchers. The team was once connected to Doug Fister, Jake Peavy, Colby Lewis, and John Danks, but elected to go with the seven-year veteran Tommy Milone.

Milone began the 2017 season with Milwaukee, but did not fare well, posting a 6.43 ERA in six games (three starts). The 30-year old was once viewed as a suitable rotation piece with the Athletics, where he went 13-10 with a 3.74 ERA in 31 starts in 2012. However, after a trade to the Minnesota Twins in 2014, Milone's career hit a snag. In 2015-16, Milone put up a combined 4.55 ERA in 43 appearances (35 starts).

For his career, Milone has logged over 700 innings pitched and accumulated a 45-33 record with a 4.21 ERA and 6.5 K/9. With a $1.25 million salary in 2017, the veteran will given a solid opportunity to reclaim his stock in the league.

For the Mets, it is important that they add Milone to the starting rotation right away. Rafael Montero has been astronomically bad in 2017, so one has to imagine that he will be on his way out very soon.

In the meantime, good job by Sandy Alderson on taking a flier on Milone. Perhaps the Mets will continue to search the market in hopes of finding a potential innings-eater for the 2017 campaign.
