According to Mike McCartney on Twitter, quarterback Josh McCown has agreed to terms with the New York Jets. McCartney, McCown's agent, announced that it was a one-year deal worth $6 million in guaranteed money.
McCown, 37, has evolved into an NFL journeyman throughout his 15-year career. Primarily a backup quarterback, the veteran spent the past two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, but struggled with injuries and poor play. Interestingly, Browns head coach Hue Jackson offered McCown a job on his staff at the end of the 2016-17 season, but McCown clearly feels that he still has enough left in the tank to play another year.

Holding a combined 2-20 record as a starter in the last three seasons, McCown will not be viewed as a savior to the franchise. However, he has seen much more success as a backup quarterback and that may be where the Jets envision him in 2017-18. Right now, his competition consists of Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, both of whom have seen little-to-no NFL action in their brief careers.

Perhaps the Jets see McCown as a mentor to the younger players. Recently, Hue Jackson claimed that the veteran helped Johnny Manziel, Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan make the transition from collegiate-ball to professional.
In addition, Jackson also said "(McCown) knows what it takes to coach and play in this league, and he's going to be a rising star in this profession if that's what he chooses to do."
McCown has accumulated over 14,000 passing yards in his career, including 79 touchdown passes. On October 11, 2016, he had a career day, throwing for 457 yards against the Baltimore Ravens.
